About the Author
Ursula Dronke is Emeritus Vigfusson Reader in Ancient Icelandic Literature and Antiquities, University of Oxford and and Emeritus Fellow, Linacre College, Oxford. Her publications include The Poetic Edda: Volume I: Heroic Poems and Volume II: Mythological Poems (both Clarendon Press), and The role of sexual themes in Njals saga: The Dorothea Coke memorial lecture in northern studies (Viking Society for Northern Research).

but at least she's excellent at it

Dronke is a feminist scholar, but at least she's excellent at it. Unfortunately, she died before translating all of the Poetic Edda, but I am glad to have as much of her well-researched and well-written work on the Poetic Edda as I can get. One of the aspects of her work I like is the full accounting for her decisions on editing and translating. However, the shopper should be aware that despite the title of this book, it contains wisdom poetry - the Havamal & Voluspa -- in addtion to myths.

The Poetic Edda: Volume 3

I have been working on a translation of Beowulf for the past three years, inspired to do this by my love of JRRTolkien and his writing. Since his inspiration for a lot of his legendarium came from the Northern tales, I have begun a study of them as well. This book is well organized, clear and concise, and has become very helpful. It is also vastly entertaining, and full of legendary characters who have all stood the test of time. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the Northern mythology.
