Solid information, poorly presented.

This book presents a crappy appearance. At first, it appears disorganized and non-user-friendly, at least to someone who doesn't already speak and read modern Greek. It looks like a military training manual-purely utilitarian, developed directly from a single-width typewritten manuscript, with no use of typesetting. It's like reading pages typed on a Remington Portable, and the pages are packed solid, top to bottom, which makes it difficult to pick out any particular subject matter. There are reasons to use varying sizes and weights of type, and this book doesn't make use of them. The table of contents is useless-it's half a page long and consists of a list of topics covered, but without page numbers. Another reviewer mentioned that there aren't many examples of conversational usage; there are folktales including conversations.
On the other hand, there is a useful index. If you need to find out about a particular grammatical situation, you can, using the index. Another thing I like about the book is: there are no cartoons. Even the best college-level Greek grammar books, for some reason, rely on in-context cartoons to
...what? Break up the text? Make the student smile? Frankly, speaking as a student, I smile when I get the right information in a comprehensible manner, and am able to use it correctly. So, this book is worth having, if you are willing to put up with packed page after packed page of unvarying, uninflected typewritten material. For a Yale University Press publication, it's unimpressive. It really could use an overhaul.

Great book. I've been studying Greek for years now ...

Great book. I've been studying Greek for years now (my mother comes from Greece), and this book builds upon vocabulary and grammar in a logical progression from chapter to chapter. Best book I've ever used for learning the Greek language (besides the children's books I used as a kid). It's so great, I've search to see if there is a continuation to this book... (haven't found it yet).

Excellent and serious book. It takes a little time to get used to the font, but that's not a big deal.
